Hiddleston's Songs of the Day (16)

6/29/2012

June 28 to July 1, 2012

Another installment already. How are we to keep up?

Last but not least, this isn't technically a "Song of the Day," but... It's a beautifully lonely sound with a sense of impending danger. I'd never even heard of Dead Man before he mentioned it. I'm glad he did.

Falkor Folklore

I've always loved Neverending Story and Falkor was the best part. I watched it so many times when I was younger. I haven't seen it in a while. I should. Sadly, I'm on a strict budget at the moment and can't get another shirt. I'm addicted and need to stop spending. Also, there's no more room in my closet until I get rid of some things. I'll just have to content myself with using it as my desktop pic.

But that doesn't mean you can't have one for only $10, plus $2.75 shipping, right now. Get yours within the next 14 hours. After that there's a new shirt. Every day is a new shirt. Everything at TeeFury is a limited edition.

On the Edge of the Town

6/22/2012

A little bit of "poetry" inspired by Silent Hill: Downpour. I have the sign "Early Residents of The Devil's Pit" to blame for this.

On the edge of a Silent town
A day so serene
Not a breeze, not a sound
In this Devil's playground
There unfolds a disturbing scene

Shadows in the corner of your eye
A feeling on the stairs
But however you try
To find a way through the lie
The whispers fill the air

From the enveloping dark
The depths of the Pit
It shuffles relentless toward your heart
To tear it apart
Bit by shuddering bit

Hiddleston's Songs of the Day (15)

6/22/2012

An ordeal doesn't begin to describe it. I gave up on doing much of anything today. It's almost dinner time. I started at breakfast. Snapbird just kept giving me more and more...and more...results. It finally stopped at October 16, 2011.

A few of my own recommendations are sprinkled throughout. Alrighty then, let's get to it.

I liked Tom Hiddleston in Thor, which I must watch again in order to more appreciate the first iteration of Loki, but I relished that suave manner and evil grin in The Avengers, even though he does a certain horrible thing to a certain beloved character. I didn't see War Horse, because I always avoid movies with animals as main characters. Do they ever not break your heart? And anything else he was in before that was until recently unknown to me. But he was just terrific in The Avengers and surely will be in any future projects, so I followed him on Twitter and found his song of the day tweets. How fun. I love his selections and I think he should be creating a top ten for Sam Neill's TwoPaddocks.

June 20 to June 24, 2012

Only three Hiddleston selections here. That's just how it ended up.

From Hell's Heart I...Give Thee Paper Cuts

6/21/2012

Since it will take me until the end of time to finish just one weapon in Inkpad and Art Studio, even though I'm getting better at those apps, I've decided to just post a hand drawn weapon once in a while. Maybe one day they'll be nice and clean (and straight!), but it won't be soon. This is far from my best. It doesn't have much detail and there's no color to speak of, but I still like it a lot. Earlier this month it had the distinction of being the worst thing I had ever created. See all those lines I erased? I kept trying and failing. I even wrote "FUCK IT" on the page and didn't touch it for two years. Then something changed recently. Don't know how. Don't know why. All I know is I'm glad it did.

On the Fringe, Part III

6/20/2012

It has certainly been a while since my last teaser, more than a month. Where have I been? Oh, yeah, caught up in another obsession. If only The Avengers hadn't been so terrific I may have finished this. Instead I was contributing to the Coulson Lives Project. Time to get back to Fringe for a little bit.

I was so sure it wouldn't have time to end satisfactorily, but the writers blew me away, as they always do. Even though Fringe has more to tell us, the fourth season finale served as a perfect emotional close to the series.

Losing My Mind

6/19/2012

What the crap happened to my copy of Martin Page's "In the Temple of the Muse"? I waited more than a decade for it and didn't know it existed for two years after it was released. After that long I didn't imagine there would actually be another. I only listened to a few songs. I always do that. Music I want stacks up and then I'll get four albums at once. Then one really grabs me and I have to listen over and over and forget that I bought others.

So, I woke up thinking about "...Muse" for some reason last Friday and thought I would play it in the car while shopping, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Maybe in one of the cars? If it is then it's been there for months. I ended up going with U2 and Florence + The Machine instead of my usual German rock, Darren Hayes, DMB, or BSB. Going to have to make a copy from my computer then go cuckoo bananas looking for it.

Okay, it's a new day. Just decided to check the shelf I thought I put it on, the shelf I already checked three times. It's there. WTF?! The same thing happened before to Team America World Police. It just disappeared, only to reappear later. Three people searched the same area multiple times and somehow never saw it. Or the Underpants Gnomes have expanded their business, which reminds me of Dewey on Malcolm in the Middle when he started doing little things to Lois to make her think she was going crazy.

Game of Mirrors

6/19/2012

Watching Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows this past weekend, I was reminded of The Avengers and the Fringe episode "Brave New World, Part 1." Though, that should have been the other way 'round since I saw Sherlock first in the theater.

Rude Awakenings - Sherlock (Robert Downey Jr, for those who've just come back from Mars) jolting to life after the adrenaline shot reminded me of Iron Man being startled awake (alive?) by Hulk roaring in The Avengers. Both scenes were at first tense and then hilarious. I love how the "giant green rage monster" was concerned for Tony. Of course, there are no Avengers scenes on YouTube yet, only quick shots set to music, but if you're here you probably saw it anyway. If you haven't, go now and read nothing else here concerning this movie. I'll wait. Blockbusters like this need to be experienced on a big screen and through deafening speakers. There's fun and humor, rivalry and friendship, feeling and loss, intelligent writing and exceptional actors who don't even need a word, and a talented director able to wring emotion and truth out of any situation. It's a complete and engaging package. You will leave with a smile on your face that sticks around for days.

The Good Bishops - Near the end of ...Shadows, Moriarty (Jared Harris) and Sherlock are playing a game of chess, both literally and figuratively. I immediately thought of this season's penultimate episode of Fringe, where William Bell gave a speech to David Robert Jones (Harris) about the art of chess, a game that serves well in highlighting the instability of a refined madman, who likens people to pieces on a board to be sacrificed.

Damn, Downey is great in everything. I've known for a while, but I'm always amazed. I love this movie even more than the first time, because now I can catch things I missed, like the satanic pony with a fork in his hoof comment, and savor again that unexpectedly disturbing, intense scene where Sherlock was seemingly and literally just a fish on Moriarty's hook, perfectly composed with screams of agony and the discordance of two pieces of music playing simultaneously. One of the best scenes of both RDJ Sherlock movies and one that will always be remembered.

Heart of the Team

Heart of the Team - Coulson Lives 2

Okay, so I lied. I said I wouldn't do another drawing for the Coulson Lives Project. Two days later I started this one. It was drawn in Inkpad and shaded in Art Studio, both for the iPad. I spent over a week on this, constantly going back over bits I'm not quite happy with. I'm currently obsessed with Avengers and learning these art programs. It takes up a lot of time, which I need for other obsessions. I'm mired in this one right now because I love the character and believe the right writer(s) could bring him back in a sequel in an emotional way that wouldn't lessen the impact of his apparent death.

This heart isn't just for Coulson but for the whole team.  At first I was going to use all superhero personas, but that didn't fit well and I like real names better. I was going to use all last names, because it all started using "Coulson Lives," but that didn't fit either and was too impersonal. Then I did a mix and I ran into the same problem. Finally, first names worked. I would have liked to use "Phil," but I have to keep "Coulson" for the project.

I could have said "Hulk Smashes," but who hasn't heard that a million times? I almost said "Thor Hammers," but no kidding...and that sounds odd. Originally I had "Barton Snaps," because he does some snap shooting (firing without aiming). I thought it might also work for his change of heart regarding Loki, but that doesn't really apply since it was mind control and not cracking under pressure. "Swagger" works better here since he's quite confident in his abilities. There is a lot more to Natasha than glaring, but she does it well and "kicks ass" is more than one word. Also, I already had Thor pummeling and Bruce brawling. I needed something different. Of course, Steve assumed the role of their leader in the end, so that one never changed. The first and last piece of the puzzle was Tony. I had from the beginning "Tony Snarks," you know, because he's snarky. But that just didn't sit right with me because it seems that's not a form of the word, though it should be. So, I chose "Sparks" not only because he grates against everyone, but because he's fired up when Captain America questions his motives and basically his heart.

Alrighty, that's enough of that. Time to get back to hookblading the hapless guards in Assassin's Creed:Revelations.

Update: For fun I added two variations.

Wash as a Rex

6/08/2012

Photobucket

"Just Keep Flying" features Wash from Firefly and Serenity (the fantastic Alan Tudyk) as one of his dinosaurs, or, more precisely, a dinosaur dressed up as Wash. It's adorable and depressing all at once! You know what I mean if you were in love with the character and saw the movie.

So sad that I can't have this. I always tell myself I'm not going to keep buying shirts, that I need to save some money. I'm sticking to it this time even though it's killing me to do this. It's just a shirt. It's just a shirt. It's just a shirt...and I already have one with Wash and dinos. Alrighty, feeling better. But I didn't say you couldn't have one. It's gone in less than 14 hours, like a certain leaf on the wind.

Son of Coul Now Just $10

6/06/2012

Photobucket

Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God! Son of Coul is at RiptApparel today. I wasn't going to be buying any more shirts for a while, no matter how great. But I have to make an exception for this wonderful work of art. I had this on my list of must buys, but it wasn't going to be any time soon since it was $30 at RedBubble and I had already just spent that amount on a Coulson Lives shirt. Get yours now. They're gone in 11 hours. They start at $10 plus $2.75 shipping.

Update: Sadly, my shirt arrived soon after with a hole. Because it's a one-day deal all I could do was get a refund. But RiptApparel is an excellent company and refunded my money immediately without fuss. Eventually, I'll have to get an unripped version from RedBubble for $30, though.

I May Be Zany

6/05/2012

I remember having an intense dislike for Hi Honey, I'm Home. My family and I "watched" this when it aired on ABC in the '90s. I would call this refuse, slime, filth, muck, but I never want to associate this bag of crap - no, that makes me think of Paul Rudd on Friends - with The Princess Bride. Hmm, hideous swamp beast? Yes, I think that fits. It must have been the only thing on in that time slot, because we regularly made fun of it and wondered how it could possibly exist. I thought it couldn't be worse than I remembered. It is. What 14 minutes of this show got out of me was one small smile, two heh's, and a whole lot of brain leakage.

I watched this today only because, instead of The New Adventures of Old Christine, Lifetime was having a marathon of Dance Moms. I'd rather kick myself in the face.

First Season, $25.99

Second Season, $37.99

Complete Third Season, $29.99

Complete Fourth Season, $47.99

Bonus: Did you love Clark Gregg (Agent Couson) in the Marvel movies? He's in Old Christine and makes the most out of every scene, as do Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, the rest of the cast, and all the guest stars. Just hilarious.

A Cartman Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is the funniest thing. If only I hadn't already spent every last penny on t-shirts, I would be adding this to my collection. Or I'd get it as a present for one of my brothers. It can be yours for only $10, with shipping starting at $2.75. But it's gone in just over 12 hours, so don't hesitate for too long.

Our Hope ~ Coulson Lives

6/04/2012

Our Hope - Coulson Lives

Just my little contribution to #CoulsonLives. Oh my God, is it really finished? It damn well better be or I'm going to cry and have a fit. I spent entirely too long on this, too many late nights. I almost can't believe I'm done...and contemplating another. Won't happen, but I'd like it to.

Does it look like I went overboard with the message? Maybe. That's because I couldn't stick with a decision. There was a lot of fooling around with Bezier curves, colors, gradients, anchor points, et cetera, to get things exactly right. And then I changed my mind...and changed it again. I give you them all at once, because I don't have time to make three different "cards." Then I would be very tempted to play around, change the background over and over, maybe attempt a character, and I'd probably quit half way through.

I actually had more than a few ideas. If only I remembered how to draw, I could have done what I wanted originally. Coulson's face in comic book form might have played a part. I'm envying all those wonderful people with drawing skills who have already contributed and those who are just doing it for themselves, especially the ones behind these beauties:

Okay, back to me. They're in order of first to last idea, even though the first was the last to be finished and the third uses the second's unmodified lettering. And don't even get me started on that. I made two completely different sets of letters for this. Don't know why. It almost made me nuts. I definitely have respect for font designers. It can take years to design a complete font. Took me three weeks just to come up with a few decent glyphs. Why didn't I just use an Avengers-type font? I like it, but I was already working on my own before I thought of it.

Boy, this would have been so much quicker to draw in sand. Why didn't I? Because a few people have already. And seeing as I don't have sand, that probably wouldn't work. I would love to be more efficient, but I'm new to vectors. Only completed a couple little things. Looks like it will be a while. Hopefully, I'll keep at it...maybe with program other than Inkpad. After a while, I guess if there are too many objects (both visible and hidden), there will be ghosts you can't delete, paths you can't separate, objects that suddenly multiply when you're trying to get rid of them, and crashes that make it impossible to undo the last thing it screwed up. Though, I can make a decent enough whatchamacallit here, I'm thinking about getting iDraw since Inkpad hasn't been updated in forever and is seriously limited and starting to be frustrating.

Really

6/03/2012

Just realized I've been making videos 560px wide and pictures 600px wide. What the...? Why is this happening? And which will I choose? Decisions, decisions. I'll probably waffle back and forth and never settle on one.

Yup, a completely useless post...or is it?

My First Phil Coulson T-Shirt

Coulson Lives! At least in t-shirt form. It's a beauty and it comes in a number of colors. I ordered it just over a week ago and it arrived yesterday using standard shipping. Great service. Get your own from @abby745 on Twitter. She'll DM you the link or ask me in the comments.

The title of the shirt is actually "He Lives in Us." It was apparently inspired by one of my favorite songs.

The Wrong Chocolate Factory

6/02/2012

"I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest." (Mr. Turkentine, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)

Every once in a while I come across Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was on MTV this morning and I got sucked in, but not because I care for it. While the versatile Johnny Depp is always someone to watch, I can barely stand this movie. There are a few chuckles here and there, but nothing close to the original. I do like Charlie and his grandfather, though, and the ending is nice, the first time in the entire movie you can actually see Wonka as human. Even if I'm not comparing it to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it's exceedingly unrealistic and annoying for the most part. I need to have sympathy for a character or be amused by them to like them and they need to have some sort of basis in reality. The original Oompa Loompas weren't creepy, shrunken clones. Well, actually, they were a bit creepy.

The songs in the original were great.

The new songs need to be killed.

The children and their parents were horrible yet funny. The new people deserve to all go down the garbage chute. And though Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka had a slight mean streak, as opposed to Depp's bubbling under the surface insanity, he was hilarious and conveyed a sadness in his eyes even while he was smiling. Willy Wonka is a movie that anyone of any age can enjoy over and over. Charlie is a movie to pretend never existed.

Bonus Fact//
Mr. Turkentine was played by David Battley. He was also Ergo in Krull, another favorite movie of mine.

Now, time to watch The New Adventures of Old Christine for a welcome dose of hilarity. :) But Clark Gregg is in it, so it's time to miss Coulson again. :( Need to get back to The Avengers before it's out of theaters.

I Have a Logo

6/01/2012

Red 'RB' Logo

I finished my own logo! Yay! Okay, enough being excited. I've wanted one for years, but I never took the time. This logo is absolutely nothing like the one I originally wanted. That's because I didn't use even a bit of that idea. It was more complicated and I'm just learning my vector app (yes, still, all these *months later), so I went for something easier. Or so I thought. I worked on it for weeks. Partly because I don't know what I'm doing, partly because I didn't have a lot of extra free time, but mostly because I just wanted to do something else whenever I wasn't working (e.g. video games, reading, drawing weapons, TV). Eventually, I think I'll refine it, when I use a more precise program. At the same time I was working on a little #CoulsonLives project, which is almost done. It just needs a few adjustments. Watch out for it here in the next few days...hopefully. I'll explain that "hopefully" later.
