Anthony Villafuerte (aka Zerobriant), a terrific artist, needs spinal disc surgery to get back to normal and possibly save his life. I don't know him, but I know and love his work. If you frequent the daily t-shirt sites, you have likely seen and admired and maybe even bought a shirt with one of his designs. You can read more about what happened at Help Save Zero. Both of the above shirts are available at TeeFury, but the extremely popular The 11th Hour will be gone after Friday. Buying one will help with his medical bills, and anyone who missed The 11th Hour the first time around gets a second chance, so it's a win-win. More of Anthony's extensive work is available at RedBubble and Ript Apparel.

For now I will not be making money on any sales from this. It wouldn't feel right, so those are not affiliate links. But if you would like to support this site, there is always a TeeFury link around. You can find one in the menu at the top, right there by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

All Work and No Play

Normally I have a lot of things to say about a shirt for those who may not be sure what it's all about, but this is pretty self-explanatory. Why couldn't this come out around Halloween, when I might have some money again?

Wait why are you still staring at it instead of buying it at TeeFury? Are you're lost? Okay, that's Jack Nicholson. The shirt references The Shining. Directed by Kubrick. Original book written by my favorite writer Stephen King. Go read it and watch it. Yes, do both. They're are some major differences. But by the time you come back this shirt will be gone. You only have until the end of today.

UPDATE:
ALL WORK AND NO PLAY is not yet available anywhere else, but Benny Graphix is the designer. Maybe ask him nicely to make it available in a store like Red Bubble.

Hello Night Fury

 photo hello-night-fury_zps253c5e3c.jpg

Oh my goodness! You're kidding me, right, RiptApparel? I don't have one cent I can put towards this now. Why must you always (by always I mean just twice) put out a How to Train Your Dragon shirt when I've just spent my money on something else. I don't have one yet even though this is one of my favorite movies. I hope Toothless wins this versus. DaMasks is somewhat interesting and I can spy Iron Man, Darth Vader, Spider-Man, some I don't care about, and others I've seen but can't place. It's a good design, but I don't even know why it's up against Hello Night Fury. They aren't similar in any way.

Today's shirts are on sale until the end of the day and they start at $10 each. Shipping starts at $2.98. If you miss them don't worry, you'll have another chance tomorrow, but they will be a bit more expensive.

UPDATE
Hello Night Fury is now available for $20 in Roylemontea's Teepublic store.

Beginning of the End :: Art of Level 7
Season 1, Episode 22 Preview

Exclusively revealed by Entertainment Weekly, this is the sixth and final print in the Art of Level 7 series for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. After everything that's happened this season, and particularly in the last five soul-crushing episodes of the Uprising arc, the "Beginning of the End" should be a really significant finale.

Trust Me is a Gem of a Movie

5/08/2014

That title may be a bit misleading. That's how I feel about the movie, but those who prefer sunny endings may be disappointed. If I didn't at least preface my recommendation this way, I know some people who would be annoyed with me. I used to feel the same way, and I still do depending on the implied promise an individual story makes to me. It all matters in how the story is playing out, its mood, and its intentions as to whether or not I feel betrayed by it. An ending doesn't always redefine the journey.

If you know nothing about Trust Me, do not first read about it at IMDb. More so than the opening of the movie, which filled me with a nervousness throughout, the description kind of gives away something it shouldn't have, something I was looking for the entire time and wouldn't have been suspicious of until nearing the end. The impact of the revelation that I'm trying to dance around would have been more powerful. Still it was done so well and in such an unexpected way that Trust Me earned every tear and concerned expression I'm sure I would have seen on myself had I been holding up a mirror while watching. So I will try my best to not give too much away. Trust Me is about Howard Holloway, a down on his luck (way, way down) agent to child actors whose clients and their fame-obsessed parents consistently dump for his slimeball rival, Aldo, who takes a disturbing pleasure in ruining Howard. At his lowest point, a point he probably should have given up and gone into a different business instead of clinging to a life that took his childhood and promised nothing but pain in adulthood, Howard comes across the next "Joanie Foster" in Lydia. But she brings a problem of her own into the mix in the form of her alcoholic father.

This is a short film (less than 90 minutes) that is far from thin on commentary on the state of the ruthless business of movies. It actually seemed longer than it was. Not that it was dragging on. I was having such a good time with it that I savored every scene. I wanted to watch it again the same day. You may not be quite sure about it at the start and at the finish, but all the way through you will be rooting for this underdog, hoping that he finally gets out of this deep hole the industry has dug for him instead of being buried in it. With everything I've ever incidentally read or seen, I really wonder if anyone makes it through without being permanently scarred. I'm reminded of things like child beauty pageants, where some parents go too far in projecting their dreams onto their kids. I shudder to think.

So, no, this is not the happiest of movies. There is a great deal of manipulation and backstabbing. Fortunately, Trust Me is more than the sum of its painful moments. It also has a great sense of humor and sparkles with the charm of Amanda Peet and the razor sharp intelligence of newcomer Saxon Sharbino (Touch), not to mention Sam Rockwell, Felicity Huffman, Allison Janney, and William H. Macy in a small but memorable moment. What a great cast. But I am most impressed with the immense talent of Clark Gregg (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), who plays Howard. He wrote, directed, and acted in this little gem and imbued a warm heart throughout. Trust Me proves once again that Gregg should have been a main attraction far sooner, and it reinforces why he's one of my favorite people and why he should be one of yours.

Trust Me is in select theaters on June 6, but you can rent or buy it now on Amazon: Trust Me (Watch Now Before It's in Theaters). It was well worth my $12.99. It is also available from iTunes.

I love how the trailer only hints at what this movie truly is.

Save Almost Human

5/07/2014

I had this done a week ago, but I held back on publishing because I was going to make a gif. It's usually a good idea to have pretty pictures since that's what draws people in. Most people who see hundreds or thousands of words of text run away screaming, or so I assume. Well, I didn't get to the gif. The weekend was spectacularly busy, as will be the case until the middle of June. Mother's Day is this coming weekend. Then it's my Dad's birthday, my cousins' birthdays, a tag sale, Father's Day, and my parent's anniversary. Not to mention the five blogs I have to write for, maintain and update. So, no pictures this time.

Yup, there goes Fox again. Last week they cancelled Almost Human. I had nothing to say then, because Fox just really takes the fight out of me. It's almost always the same old story. I never had a good feeling that Almost Human was on that channel. Even though they gave Fringe time to craft a perfect finale, it was very close to getting the axe quite a bit, and that was the one exception to their normal brutality towards great shows that don't immediatley do spectacular numbers. The first sign of trouble for me was when they pushed the premiere back by a few weeks. Then they shuffled around the episodes, unbeknownst to casual viewers, so it looked as though continuity didn't matter to the writers. One week John and Dorian would be bickering like an old married couple, the next it would be like they hardly knew each other. Despite the fact that its numbers were consistent with The Following, making it's mark with only 13 episodes, it was hard to keep faith and enthusiastically tell people to watch the show, because it was on a network that doesn't care about nurturing quality. Almost Human seemed headed for cancellation from nearly the very beginning.

Then after the finale, the Saturday reruns were preempted in favor of Rake. That was it. We were told to keep our chins up and keep tweeting about the show, and there was even positive buzz about it being picked up for season 2 since it did well despite Fox's meddling, but to no avail. When I heard of the cancellation, I sent my condolences to creator Joel Wyman. Then my next thought was that another network could be Almost Human's savior, maybe Syfy or Netflix. No sooner had I thought of it than petitions were being tweeted about. I doubted Netflix would, because AH is such a fledgling show and they would have to put a lot of money into production. I assumed it would be a better fit for Syfy. I really despise them sometimes for cancelling some of my favorite shows, but when I think about it, those shows (Eureka, Warehouse 13, Battlestar Galactica) are given good, if sometimes short runs, and they tend to be allowed the time to write proper finales. They may cancel older shows in favor of new ones, many in the reality category, and develop hundreds of terrible movies that people enjoy making fun of, and have a paltry catalog of old sci-fi movies and series instead of building their stable of great scripted series, but what does make it to air gets a fair shot. After I was finished writing this last week, Syfy unequivocally passed, preferring to focus on their own shows. I understand, but it might have been a great fit. But a guy at Netflix passed it on to the higher ups. Cross your fingers.

If you would like to sign a petition for Almost Human to get a second chance at life, there's no harm in it. Maybe there could be some good.

"All that anger, all that pain, you need to hold it in and focus it on Skye. She's alive, and she just walked out of here hand-in-hand with someone she knows is a murderer, because she's playing him just like he played us."
—Phil Coulson

Update, 1-3-2018: Since I bought this AoS-type font a couple days ago, I've been going through all my posts and giving the titles some consistency. Unfortunately, many subtitles were a victim of my new format. This one was originally "I'll Never Abandon Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." I could also have titled it "Disloyal Viewers" or "Instant Gratification Seekers." Some people get way, way too involved with just one character in an ensemble and abandon it the moment it veers off the safe, same path. Apparently, some people have a hard time envisioning how a plot twist that twists a knife in the emotions of the characters could result in the best moments going forward. These moments are what give the actors something real to work with. The viewers receive a gift of feeling in the wake of tragedy. It's what connects us to the story and makes us care. Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked, but you can read more thoughts along the same lines below.

I wanted to have this done by last Thursday, but May (not the agent) started kicking my ass early. I read comments again. Please save me from the people who make rash decisions then feel they need to leave their opinions below things I read. If you stopped watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. because of what happened with Ward, if you didn't watch anything after "Turn, Turn, Turn," then I feel sorry for you. You might feel like you were betrayed as a fan, but there is a difference between being betrayed by a character and being betrayed by the writers and the show itself. It felt personal to turn Ward, someone we grew to love because he was in every episode as part of the team, but that's what makes it work. At that moment a great show became an incredible show that isn't afraid to have true emotion. Instead of being a season full of isolated incidents, it's all connected with a larger universe and every episode matters.

Hello Hydra and Hello...Squirrel

I never cared about Hello, Kitty, but I would absolutely buy these for the adorable Marvel and Up references. Now that Hydra has taken over in the marvelous (yes, I went there) Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and everything is hopeless, I would proudly declare that I was always with them by wearing the "Hello, Hydra" shirt. Then I would work from the inside to destroy them. Actually, I would probably give up really quick on that. Seems like a lot of work. But better than that, I have never seen an Up shirt. It was a terrific movie. One of my favorites from Pixar, and one of my favorites of all-time. I would love to have my own Dug. He's so adorably dopey.

You have less than 15 hours to get one of these shirts before they're gone for good. They start at just $11. Add $1 for 2X and $2 for 3X. Shipping isn't free, but it's very reasonable at only $3.

Hello Hydra is not available anywhere, but maybe you could not to insistently beg Bamboota to put it up for sale on TeePublic or RedBubble.

Hello...Squirrel is available for $14 in FamousAfterDeth's TeePublic store and $26 in his RedBubble store.

"I also like how the branches of the trees are entwined in the Hydra logo at the top, and then seem to stretch into his brain, as if they’re controlling him."
—Andrea Towers, EW.com

Out of the five limited edition posters for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., this is my fourth favorite. I could never say any weren't favorites, because the show overall has been fantastic and the final episodes of the season are mind-blowing and have left a lot of fans emotional wrecks. But I don't have the money to spend right now, and I liked the previous print more. This one is a bit busy for my taste, and I feel like I would have to mount it so it rotates, though it grows on me more every time I look at it. It will likely have more significance and beauty once I see "Ragtag." ("Boy, was I was right about that one!" she says from all the way over here in 2020, having gone through the events of this episode and so much more. We're now in the seventh and final season, which started with Coulson dealing with his third resurrection—and the fans celebrating it—and the team racing through time. Just eleven episodes to go now. Looking forward to "Alien Commies from the Future!" which, as a title, is just fun.)
